Visit from two overseas Esperantists

On Saturday 18th July, two of our members (Shayne and Sebeto) spent a wonderful morning in Esperantujo with two visitors from overseas: Heroo (Korean Esperantist visiting from Norway) and Deborah (Australian Esperantist visiting from Spain).

We shared some adequate coffee and not-so-good cake, but what we lacked in food and drink we made up for in discussion. Topics included our own back-stories, the decline of some local (and global) Esperanto groups, Artificial Intelligence and encouraging young (and not-so-young) people to learn Esperanto.

This wonderful community is why we learn Eseranto. Thanks to all involved.

Sabate 18-a Julio, du el niaj membroj (Ŝohano kaj Sebeto) pasis bonegan matenon en Esperantujo kun du vizitantoj el eksterlando: Heroo (Korea Esperantisto vizitante de Norvegio) kaj Deborah (Aŭstralia Esperantisto vizitante de Eŭskio).

Ni dividis iom bonetan kafon kaj malbonetan kukon, se kio ni mankis pri manĝaĵo kaj trinkaĵo, ni superis pri diskutado. Temoj inkluzivis niajn proprajn rantoktojn pri origino, la malpligrandiĝo de iom da lokaj (kaj mondaj) Espeeranto-grupoj, Artefarita Intelekto kaj kuraĝigo de juna (kaj malpli junaj) homoj por lerni Esperanton.

Ĉi tiu mirinda komunumo estas kial ni lernas Esperanton. Dank’ al ĉiuj.

Forpasis Shirley Gradussov

Nia kara amiko, kamarado kaj samideano Shirley Gradussov forpasis 5a Aŭgusto 2024.

Kiam mi eksciis Esperanton antaŭ tridek jaroj, Shirley estis mia unua instruisto. Bedaŭrinde, pro mia lernado estis nur per poŝto, mi ne vere renktontis ŝin ĝis antaŭ dek jaroj. Sed eĉ tiam, mi lernis multe de ŝi.

Shirley estis tre afabla al ni en ELWA (Esperanto Ligo de Okcidenta Aŭstralio). Kiam ni renkontis, ŝi ĉiam insistis ke ni ĉiuj manĝis multe. Kaj ne nur per manĝoĵoj; ŝia granda kono de nia kara lingvo nutris niajn mensojn.

Kvar membroj de la Ligo ĉeestis la funebra ceremonio de Shirley. Multe de la familianoj kaj amikoj ankaŭ ĉeestis por adiaŭi ŝin kaj festi ŝian vivon, kaj la fakton ke ni konis ŝin.

Shirley vere mankos al mi. Ŝi estos (kaj estas) por mi, la unua kaj pli bona Esperantisto.

The Mandorla Art Award

The Mandorla Art Review is Australia’s most significant thematic Christian art prize with a $25,000 major acquisitive prize.

This year the theme is “Micah 6:6”, a passage in the Bible that reminds us to walk humbly through life.

The winning artwork is “8200 Souls” by Britt Mikkelsen, which you can see here. It is a 3-dimensional transparent object made of resin, shaped like an unidentified person squatting on the floor, draped in a fabric full of holes. It is illuminated from within and the light shines out through the holes, representing the thousands of faceless, homeless people.

Resembling the Virgin Mary, the impact is powerful and I believe the next time I walk past a homeless person I will be reminded of the magnitude of people existing in similar circumstances.

Mandorla Arto-Premio

La Mandorla Arto-Premio estas la plej signifoplena konkurso de kristanotema arto en Aŭstralio, kun $25,000 ĉefa premio.

La temo ĉi-jare estas “Micah 6:8”, eltiraĵo el la Biblio kiu memorigas nin humile piediri tra la vivo.

La venkinta artaĵo estas “8200 Animoj” de Britt Mikkelson, videbla ĉi tie. Ĝi estas tridimensia, travidebla objekto el rezino, en formo kaj grandeco de homo, nekonebla, kaŭranta sur la planko, drapita en truoplena teksaĵo. Ĝi estas lumigita de interne, la lumo brilanta tra la truoj. La figuro reprezentas la milojn da anonimaj, senhejmaj homoj.

Al mi, ĝi similas la Virgulinon Maria. La efiko estas ege potenca kaj mi kredas, ke la venontan fojon kiam mipreterpasos senhejman homon, mi konscios pri la sennombraj tiuj kiuj ekzistas en similaj cirkonstancoj.

A small group of Esperanto-speaking (and not currently English-speaking) folks gathered together in the cafe at the State Library on the last Satuday of January.

We were overjoyed to welcome Debra (former Perthie and current Welsh resident) and Aleksey (new Perthie, formerly of Saint Petersburg, an Esperanto beginner but very eager and capable learner). Shayne, Lyndell, Heather and I also attended.

To exercise our knowledge of the language (and our brains), we played “Taboo”.

☺ On the table, keeping an eye on everyone and everything, was our green friend Kroko (from time to time, nibbling on English-speakers).

Pli da neetnolingvado

Kolektiĝis grupeto da ne-etnolingvo- sed ja Esperanto-parolantoj en kafejo ĉe la Ŝtata Biblioteko, la lastan sabaton en Januaro.

Ni tre ĝojis bonvenigi Debra McCarney, eks-Pertano nun Kimrujano, kaj Aleksey Korolev, eks-Sankta Peterburgano, nun Pertano, komencanto sed tre avida kaj kapabla lernanto. Shayne Power, Lyndell Savage, Heather Long kaj mi ankaŭ ĉeestis.

Por ekzerci kaj la lingvo-scipovon kaj la cerbon, ni ludis “Tabuo”n. ☺ Sur la tablo, kontrolante ĉion kaj ĉiujn, estis nia verda amiko, Kroko🐊 (de tempo al tempo mordetante anglavortoparolanton).

Esperanto Classes in Perth

For the first time in many years, ELWA will be running Esperanto Classes.

The classes will run weekly from Saturday 2nd February 1:30-2:30pm for 10 weeks.

Location is the Goldfields Room at the State Library of WA in the Perth Cultural Centre and the cost (for the whole course) is only $10.

Learn Esperanto

The No Crocodile Hour: Jan 2020

You are invited to the Esperanto League of WA’s next NEKROKODILA HORO.

We are going to meet at the First Edition Cafe inside the State Library of WA at 10am on Saturday 25th January.

Settle in, order a coffee and/or a cake and come 10:30 we are going to put the crocodiles to sleep. Yes, that’s right, for the next hour, the only words that pass our lips will be Esperanto words.

Learning a language is difficult without practicing your listening and speaking skills. We hope that these monthly gatherings are great exercise for all of us.

If you are a new learner and only know a few words, or an introvert who doesn’t want to speak in a group, that’s fine. Just listen. You’ll hear the language used and there’ll be opportunity to ask questions before and after the hour. Bring your dictionary (or your phone with an app!) and a notepad to write down all the new words you use.
